GMC Registration

GMC Registration

GMC REGISTRATION

The General Medical Council (GMC) registers all doctors that want to practise medicine in the UK.  In order to work as a doctor in the UK, it is therefore a requirement that all doctors have registered with the General Medical Council (GMC).

The GMC registration process differs whether an applicant is a European Union citizen or a non-EU citizen.

EU Citizens GMC Registration

For EU citizens the process of GMC registration is a relatively straightforward process and once all the relevant documents have been submitted, registration will be obtained usually within 1-2 months.  All applicants have to visit the GMC in the UK (Manchester or London) at the end of the GMC registration process.

Full information on GMC registration for EU citizens is available on the GMC web site at:
http://www.gmc-uk.org/doctors/registration_applications/eea_nationals.asp

Non EU Citizens GMC Registration

The GMC registration process for non-EU citizens is less straightforward than for EU citizens. Generally, for non-EU citizens, doctors will need to pass IELTS and then PLAB test before they can apply for GMC registration.  The PLAB test is the main route by which International Medical Graduates demonstrate that they have the necessary skills and knowledge to practise medicine in the UK.

Full information on GMC registration for non-EU citizens is available on the GMC web site:
http://www.gmc-uk.org/doctors/plab.asp

When to Apply for GMC Registration

In terms of being able to apply for a job as an overseas doctor, virtually all UK employers require that any candidate (applying for either for a full time doctor job or for a locum doctor position) will already have GMC registration prior to application.  The overwhelming majority of UK employers will not consider any candidates without GMC registration already having been obtained. Therefore, if you are a doctor considering working in the UK, then the GMC registration process should be commenced well in advance of starting to apply for any doctor job in the UK.
